What Anesthesia / Sedation Is Best for You?

During your consultation at Northern Texas Facial & Oral Surgery, our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon will take the time to review your health history, answer questions, and discuss the anesthesia/sedation option that’s safest and most appropriate for your comfort during your procedure. Every patient is different—and we tailor your care to fit you.

Anesthesia & Sedation Terms

Overview
To ensure a productive conversation with your surgeon during your consultation, it’s important to familiarize yourself with basic anesthesia and sedation terms. Understanding these will help you ask informed questions and feel confident about your treatment plan.

Local Anesthesia

Numbs a specific area of the mouth; you're awake but feel no pain in the treated region.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

A mild sedative inhaled through a mask to help you relax; often used with local anesthesia.

Oral Sedation

Medication taken by mouth to reduce anxiety; you remain conscious but may feel drowsy.

Twilight Sedation (Conscious Sedation)

Delivered via IV, this method deeply relaxes you while keeping you responsive; most patients have little to no memory of the procedure.

IV Sedation

Delivered through a vein for deeper relaxation; you may not remember much of the procedure.

General Anesthesia

Used for complex surgeries; you're fully asleep and monitored throughout by our expert team.

Our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon will review your medical history and past experience with anesthesia/sedation to determine which anesthesia/sedation method is best for your safety and comfort and most appropriate for the procedure.

Our goal is to make sure you're comfortable, safe, and fully informed every step of the way. Your surgeon will discuss this in greater depth during your consultation / before your procedure.
