After Bone Grafting

  • Expect some swelling for 72 hours.
  • Bleeding varies with the procedure but should not be heavy or prolonged. Call if you have bleeding concerns.
  • Keep ice on the face of the affected area for 20 minutes out of every hour while awake for the next two days. Frozen bags of peas are helpful.
  • Put pressure on the gauze for two hours, after that replace and repeat if necessary.
  • Soft diet (non chewy) until sutures are removed or doctor gives approval. Rinse after you eat or drink anything – keep area clean – warm salt water or tap water will do.
  • Rinse with Peridex twice daily – hold for 30 seconds then spit.
  • Take medications as prescribed. If you have any untoward effects, call office for assistance.
  • The duration of local anesthesia varies from 2 – 8 hours. Be careful not to bite your lips, cheek or tongue. Move your jaw cautiously until feeling has returned.
  • Do not pull or pick on the sutures.
  • Do not brush or floss in the area of surgery.
