Orthognathic (Corrective Jaw) Surgery Timeline
Introduction
Orthognathic surgery is needed when jaws don't meet correctly and/or teeth don't seem to fit with jaws. Teeth are straightened with orthodontics and corrective jaw surgery repositions misaligned jaws. While orthodontics alone can correct bite problems if only the teeth are involved, orthognathic surgery may be required if the jaws also need repositioning. People who can benefit from orthognathic surgery may have difficulty in the following areas:
- Difficulty in chewing, biting, or swallowing
- Speech problems
- Chronic jaw or TMJ pain
- Open bite
- Protruding jaw
- Breathing problems
- Recessive (small) jaw
Comprehensive Team Approach
The patient, surgeons, dentist, and orthodontist are a team, working closely during treatment to achieve optimal results. Numerous visits to these providers and careful coordination are required for treatment. This process is time consuming and may take 6 months to 2 years to complete, depending upon insurance and treatment requirements.
Orthognathic surgery can move teeth and jaws into a new position that result in a more attractive, functional, and healthy dental-facial relationship.

We will keep you informed with frequent phone calls letting you know the status of the insurance review process.
The surgeons of NTFOS use comprehensive facial x-rays and photos, which can show you how your bite will be improved.
