IV Sedation

IV sedation, also known as conscious sedation, gives many patients the piece of mind of knowing they will “go to sleep” and wake up after their surgery. During IV sedation, you can still respond to questions, but will be very relaxed and will probably not remember the procedure.

All patients undergoing IV anesthesia in our office are monitored throughout the procedure in the same manner that patients are monitored in a hospital setting. Your surgeon will place an intravenous line which is used to administer fluids and medications which are used to reduce swelling, prevent nausea and make you “sleepy”. Once you are off to sleep, a local anesthetic will be administered which will keep the area numb even after you awaken.

You will not be able to drive after your procedure with IV sedation, so a friend or family member is expected to accompany you to your appointment and to remain in our waiting room. You will recover in our surgical recovery area, where you will spend a period of time waking up while your vital signs are continually monitored by our surgical team. Your friend or family member can wait with you in the recovery area. One of our surgical assistants will escort you in a wheelchair to your transportation.

You can expect to recover at home for at least the first 24 hours immediately following your procedure with IV Sedation. Please refrain from operating an automobile or machinery and from engaging in any other dangerous activity during this time. You are welcome to read more on post operative care for the procedure you are having under our Surgical Instructions section.
